AT 11.2 Yousuf Karsh

Maya Plisetskaya 1963

I did some research on Maya Plisetskaya because I wanted to know more about Karsh's Photograph. Maya was born in Moscow and joined the in Bolshoi Ballet 1943 and became a Prima Ballerina in 1962. After great success touring in America she started dancing out side of Russia. She continued to go on to win several awards and to compose pieces of her own along with her husband.

What really caught my eye in this picture was the lighting. The way he positioned the light really shows all the detail of her hands and legs all the way down to the point of her toes. I love the way he left out the top half of her body because it really makes you focus on her body language and not her beauty. I don't know that much about the technicalities in the dark room but I would think that he would have had to burn in some light around the top left of her dress, and body. Also the left side to the of the picture and around in the really dark areas. But Karsh was also very known for being a master of light. I noticed at the top of the picture it also looks a bit softer. He may have used some sort of softening technique.

This picture to me looks as if it could be sad because of the way her body is folded over and her arms are hanging down towards the ground. But, the light gives you an uplifting feeling as well. The picture is really beautiful because ballet is such a delicate art. The saddest pieces are still breathtaking.

CI 12: Colour Block

I found that a lot of my colours gave a me a very happy feeling, because of the things that I photographed. The cyan had a very calming feeling to my friend and the red was very warm and inviting. But to me I think that the subjects have a lot to do with the feeling. I do think that colours have a big impact on how we feel and can change what we are trying to express. For example if I had used black mittens instead of green the picture would not have been so comical and funny it would be more scary and dark.

In the end I really enjoyed this project because I like colours and finding them was fun as well. I had to use a lot of my day to day surrounds which was a challenge but having a baby with lots of toys made it more exciting.

AT 6.2- Arno Rafael Minkkinen

Arno Rafael Minkkinen was born in Helsinki Finland in 1945 and emigrated to the United States in 1957. He is currently a Professor of Arts at the University of Massachusetts. Minkkinen thinks of himself as a documentary photographer. He mainly shoot self portraits of himself posed in the most impossible positions. The way Minkkinen uses his own body in landscapes can really fool your eye to look impossible. But not only is his pictures what you see is what you get he only uses single exposures and does not do any manipulating to his images. One of the main elements that make his photos so remarkable is lighting. As I was trying to research more about his technical procedures of his process, I found that he does not like to reveal how his images are made. “I’ve learned not to give away the magic if that’s what’s there. But occasionally, it’s important to at least describe what’s going on so the viewer can say, ‘OK, that’s plausible.’”

To use my own body as a means of expressing our reationship to nature"
Arno Rafael Minkkinen

In this photograph I really like the lonely feeling you get from the water infront of her. You really don't think anything different of it until you notice that there are four sets of hands wrapped around her body. I also love the way the cliffs natural frame her body, the fact that she is nude in this picture really give you a feeling of freedom and openness as well.

I think that this photograph really draws your eye up from the bottoem of the picture to the top
of the cliff. The angle that is used from photographing from the bottom and the way the arm moves up towards the top and the sun burst right at his hand give a great DOF. I really like the way his arm moves with the cliff as well. Even though the tree on the side I think in some ways can be distracting it also give you a sense that the pictures is taken from the ground.

In this Photograph I feel like he is scared by the way he is holding his head and I love that he captured this feeling with such a simple subject. Even without his face showing you really can feel a lot of emotion. But it's not only the emotion that I like about this picture is the curiosity around how his body is coming out of the wall. I also feel like the the square photo really made it that much better.

Arno Minkkinens work to me is more then just a picture. He captures what the eye doesn't think is possible and makes it possible through a single photograph.

The beauty of my home!!!

So This Shoot was also very challenging for me again because my house is not all that interesting, but I guess that was another part of the challenge. One I had found subjects that had matched the design elements I had a lot of fun trying to capture what each element described. I also had the challenge of photographing indoor with no flash which was also very hard! slow shutter speeds equal blurry pictures YIKES!!! so I attempted to use my tripod on some shots which was hard because there was just some angles my tripod wouldn't let me do! good ol'tripod! other then that I enjoyed this shoot and the challenge of finding the beauty in my house which is not something I normally look for!

Lots of Lines

So doing this Assignment was very challenging! I found myself thinking to hard about finding the lines rather then just letting my creative side take hold of me. I had done this assignment through out many events this week and weekend which was a lot of fun. But once I got the hang of it, it was a lot of fun. Some of the images are pretty straight forward as for seeing the lines but a few of them the lines a in the background or just harder to see just glancing at them =D

The beginning of the rest of my life

I must say that I am more drawn to Maternity Photography and Baby Photography, I think this comes from personal experiences that I've had with photographers and with being a mother. I definitly have a growing passion for High Fashion, Portraits and Candid photography. I would also love to travel the world with my son and finace while doing Photojournalism.
During this school I really hope to learn how to overcome my creative blocks & express myself through my pictures.
One of my best photography-related memories would have to be when I was a little girl and my cousin had found a film camera on the grass and I was crying my eyes out because I wanted it so badly and she gave it to me. I then ran over to walmart with my mom and bought a roll of film with the last of my $5.00 allowance for the week and went all of the playground taking pictures of my cousin. They weren't anything great but it was for sure the first taste I had at what would develop in to my passion.

my first blog!

this is my first blog as a prairieview student!
